Start Your Invention Journey

A practical guide for new inventors in Australia and around the world

Have an idea? That’s enough to begin.

Most inventions don’t start with a prototype or a patent.
They start with a simple thought:

“I think this could be better.”

If that’s you — you’re in the right place.

This page will help you understand what to do next in clear, practical steps.

The 5 Steps to Get Started

1. Write your idea down clearly

Don’t overthink it. Just describe:

  • What it is

  • What problem it solves

  • How it works (roughly)

Even a sketch is enough.

2. Check if it already exists

Before investing significant time or money, do some basic research:

• Google search

• Product marketplaces

• Patent databases and prior art searches

You’re not trying to be perfect — just informed.

3. Learn how to protect your idea

At this stage, you're simply learning the basics of intellectual property and when protection matters. This includes understanding patents, registered designs, trademarks, copyright, and trade secrets, and when each may be appropriate.

4. Test whether it’s worth developing

Ask:

  • Does this solve a real problem?

  • Would anyone actually use it?

  • Is it realistically buildable?

Many ideas don't fail because they're technically difficult—they fail because they solve a problem that too few people have.

5. Talk to experienced inventors

This is where most progress happens.

You don’t need to figure it out alone.

Early feedback can also help identify technical challenges, manufacturing considerations, intellectual property issues, and commercial opportunities before significant time or money is invested.

How IAA-Vic Supports Your Invention Journey

The Inventors Association of Australia (Victoria) Inc. (IAA-Vic) supports inventors from Australia and around the world as they move from an initial idea toward development, commercialization, and recognition.

Whether you're exploring your first invention or refining an established concept, you'll find practical guidance, experienced inventors, and access to trusted resources that support every stage of the invention journey.

Members can access:

• Structured monthly meetings (online and in person)

• Peer feedback, feasibility reviews, and practical invention guidance

• Intellectual property guidance through BRM Patent Attorneys

• Advanced patent searching and prior art research using Ambercite

• Practical invention development resources through The Inventor's Toolbox™, including worksheets, planning tools, and commercialization resources

• Opportunities to showcase inventions through the Inventor of the Year Competition and other IAA-Vic programs

We are more than a networking group—we provide practical support for inventors developing ideas into real products.

Not sure if you’re ready?

You don’t need:

  • A prototype

  • A patent

  • Technical knowledge

  • Business experience

You only need:

An idea you’re curious about exploring

Final message

Every successful invention begins with an idea—and every inventor begins with uncertainty.

The difference between ideas that remain ideas and those that become real products often comes down to one thing:

Taking the first step.
