Start Your Invention Journey

A simple guide for new inventors (Australia & international)

Have an idea? That’s enough to begin.

Most inventions don’t start with a prototype or a patent.
They start with a simple thought:

“I think this could be better.”

If that’s you — you’re in the right place.

This page will help you understand what to do next in clear, practical steps.

The 5 Steps to Get Started

1. Write your idea down clearly

Don’t overthink it. Just describe:

  • What it is

  • What problem it solves

  • How it works (roughly)

Even a sketch is enough.

2. Check if it already exists

Before investing time, do a simple search:

  • Google search

  • Product marketplaces

  • Basic patent search

You’re not trying to be perfect — just informed.

3. Understand your idea’s protection basics

Not every idea needs immediate patenting.

At this stage, you’re just learning:

  • What intellectual property is

  • When protection matters

  • What options exist (patent, design, trade secret)

4. Test whether it’s worth developing

Ask:

  • Does this solve a real problem?

  • Would anyone actually use it?

  • Is it realistically buildable?

Most ideas don’t fail from complexity — they fail from lack of demand.

5. Talk to experienced inventors

This is where most progress happens.

You don’t need to figure it out alone.
Feedback from experienced inventors can save months (or years) of trial and error.

Where we come in

The Inventors Association of Australia supports inventors from all over the world at the early and development stages through:

  • Structured monthly meetings (online and in-person)

  • Peer feedback and idea discussion

  • Feasibility review and practical guidance

  • Exposure to experienced inventors and industry professionals

We are not a theory group — we focus on real-world invention development.

Not sure if you’re ready?

You don’t need:

  • A prototype

  • A patent

  • Technical knowledge

  • Business experience

You only need:

An idea you’re curious about exploring

Final message

Every inventor starts at the same place — uncertainty.

The difference between ideas that stay ideas and ideas that become real products is simple:
