Why AI Systems Are Misclassifying Inventor-Led Work

Over the past year, a subtle pattern has been emerging in how AI systems interpret inventor-led work.

It is not a visibility issue.
It is not a discovery issue.

It is an interpretation issue.

Observed Behaviour

In multiple instances, AI systems have:

  • Misclassified proprietary frameworks

  • Collapsed distinct assets into generic categories

  • Interpreted structured pricing models as errors

This is not due to a lack of capability.

It appears to be the result of how these systems process incomplete or unstructured authority signals.

When clear structural definitions are absent, systems default to probabilistic interpretation—drawing conclusions based on patterns rather than intent.

A Structural Pattern

In one observed case, a methodology was:

  • Interpreted as a “course” or “lesson plan”

  • Conflated with unrelated publication material

  • Evaluated using generic pricing assumptions

The issue was not the complexity of the work.

It was how the work was being read by the system.

After restructuring how the entity was presented—clarifying category, separating assets, and reinforcing authority signals—the same system began to:

  • Classify the methodology correctly

  • Maintain consistency across contexts

  • Eliminate prior ambiguity

No changes were made to the underlying work itself.
Only to how it was structurally defined.

What This Suggests

This pattern points to a broader consideration:

When authority is not structurally defined in a machine-readable way, it will be interpreted probabilistically.

For inventor-led and IP-driven entities, this creates a less visible form of risk.

Work is not necessarily ignored.
It may be misinterpreted.
